Pressure Ulcer Prevention

Prevention of all instances of pressure ulcers would be ideal, however this has not been the reality. While changes being made to the way our nation’s nursing homes care for our elders, pressure ulcer prevention has not been a priority in the past, affecting residents that are abused in at least one in three nursing homes across the nation. It is especially important for pressure ulcer prevention to occur since many elders are already living with other health complications and decreased immune levels that can further complicate the formation of pressure ulcers.

Elders unable to move on their own must be rotated every couple hours at least for pressure ulcer prevention. Areas of the body that stick out especially far must be watched closely for pressure ulcer prevention, including the heels, hips, tailbone, and other body parts. If any discomfort is experienced that may indicate the formation of pressure ulcers, it is important to immediately relieve that area for pressure ulcer prevention into further, more serious stages. Pressure ulcer prevention will be a natural result of better nursing home care as a whole, a nationwide problem that must be amended.
