Pressure Ulcers

Pressure ulcers, also referred to as bed sores or decubitus ulcers, are an unfortunate occurrence of nursing home abuse that has affected a vast number of elders across the entire nation. The pressure ulcers form because of unrelieved pressure in particularly bony areas of the body. When the nursing home staff fails to properly move the resident, the constant pressure of the elder's body weight over time will cause decay to occur form the lack of circulation, resulting in pressure ulcers.

The pressure ulcers are commonly experienced in areas such as the elbows, heels, hips, and tailbone. By making sure each resident is moved at least every two hours, the nursing home can avoid potentially painful pressure ulcers. If pressure ulcers are suffered, immediate attention to them can allow for a quick recovery, especially when the pressure ulcers have not yet resulted in skin lesions. Failing to quickly respond to any pressure ulcers formations can result in life-threatening infections.
