"Arkansas nursing home abuse reforms being considered"
Following the death of a nursing home resident due to a brutal beating,
Arkansas legislators are now considering nursing home abuse reforms
of hiring and supervision at facilities. Relatives of the deceased
nursing home resident have been urging legislators to enact tougher
ways to protect residents. According to one committee chair, the
Arkansas nursing home abuse legislation could be ready for a December
special session to be considered by Gov. Mike Huckabee if Arkansas
nursing home abuse is in his call for a session.
The chairman of the House Public Health, Welfare and Labor Committee
said the Arkansas nursing home abuse legislation would most likely
require nursing assistants to be specifically trained in caring
for dementia patients and to authorize the state to get rid of operators
of nursing homes where the most severe instances of nursing home
abuse has occurred.
Two nursing assistants are charged with capital murder in the woman’s
August 20, 2003 death after being accused of beating the resident
with brass knuckles in her bed at the nursing home. For more information

"Arkansas Split on Grannycam Iissue For Nursing Home
Abuse Solution"
Arkansas Representative Stephen Bright thinks that as horrifying
as many instances of Arkansas nursing home abuse can be, it is necessary
to see because it is a problem that needs to be addressed. Bright
is a supporter of the GrannyCam, a picture that will allow victims
of nursing home abuse to have video evidence, a way to hopefully
curb the widespread problem of nursing home abuse affecting the
nation as a whole, not just Arkansas. The concept of GrannyCam’s
have not been supported by many nursing homes but Bright thinks
that only the nursing homes with problematic occurrences of Arkansas
nursing home abuse will oppose having videotapes. Nursing home abuse
has become such a pertinent nationwide issue and the recent Arkansas
nursing home abuse debate regarding GrannyCams in early April 2003
showed how much of a political controversy it has stirred.

"House Approves
Controversial Bill Limiting Jury Awards Against Nursing Home Abuse"
The House approved a controversial bill in Arkansas that would limit
jury awards against nursing homes. The bill was asked to not be
sent immediately to the Senate in order to allow any consideration
of further amendments. If passed, the bill would limit punitive
damages to $1 million and has a provision that would require lawyers
to prove that a specific act was committed against their client.
Some House members against the bill felt that it “strikes
a blow at the absolute weakest among us” and that it is “fundamentally
wrong and unfair.”
