"Negligent Nursing Home Chain Fined"
The second largest chain of nursing home in California has agreed to pay $1.3 million to settle civil allegations that they were providing negligent care.
Pleasant Care Corp., a La Canada Flintridge firm, owns more than 30 nursing homes in California. The agreement resolved a lawsuit filed by Attorney General Bill Lockyer's office in his attempt to proceed with aggressively penalizing nursing homes that have failed their patients.

"Woman Suffers 3rd Degree Burns due to Nursing Home Neglect"
Another shocking case of nursing home abuse was filed in the San Mateo County Superior Court of Redwood City, California this past Tuesday. Theresa Rodriguez, a 51-year-old woman suffered severe third degree burns after being left in her wheelchair in a scalding 135-degree shower for 20 minutes.

"California Nursing Home Situation Under Senatorial Investigation"
The California Department of Health is under scrutiny by two CA state senators over nursing home abuse and neglect rates that are on the rise. The state of California looks after some 100,000 elderly patients in 1,400 nursing homes.
The contention is over whether the state is enforcing only lenient federal nursing home standards. California has passed several laws and nursing home reforms that are not being followed through, the argument states. In addition, only about 50% of nursing home abuse cases are even investigated in a timely manner.

"Richmond, CA Nursing Home Found Responsible for Patient Death"
Shields Richmond Nursing Center, a nursing home in Richmond, CA, has been found guilty in causing the death of one of its patients. The state of California has issued a $90,000 fine in the unnamed 60-year-old's death. The man's name was withheld for confidentiality reasons, but he was admitted to the facility in 2004 with severe health problems.
The man was determined to be at a high risk for falling over and actually fell in two separate, earlier, incidents. He died on March 3, 2005 from a fall in his wheelchair, after hitting his head on the ground. The patient also suffered a heart attack in conjunction with the fall. The facility knew of the man's condition and yet did not take appropriate measures in guarding his safety, according to the state's findings.
