Suit Filed on Behalf of Mother in California
May 28 , 2008
The family of a man who recently died in a nursing home fire has decided to file a suit against the facility where he once lived.
The suit has been filed against Hampton Plaza Health Care Centre in Chicago, IL.
Family Placed Victim in Home
Igor Shteyn was admitted to the nursing home by his two children after he moved to Chicago from Ukraine and proved to have problems with anxiety and depression.
Shteyn was only 67 when he entered the home and died, along with his roommate, only months later in a fire.
Fire Takes Lives
The fire broke out on the third-floor, where Shteyn was living, in a closet while most residents were sleeping.
According to police reports, the fire started from smoldering smoking materials; however, smoking was only allowed on the first floor of the building.
“It’s so stressful to me,” says Shteyn’s daughter, Mavlyanova. “I’m very upset about it.”
Lawsuit Filed
The lawsuit blames the home for the death of Shteyn and claims that there were no smoke detectors to alert the men that there was a fire.
People were reportedly banging on doors to alert the staff, yet lives were taken and many were still injured.
