New data on nursing home industry released

August 1st , 2005

In Indiana, new data has revealed the most common deficiency with the state's certified nursing home facilities were professional standards. Violations of professional standards mean the nursing homes did not make sure the services they provided met all levels of standardized quality.

The new report released by Kaiser Family Foundation also found that accidents were the most common deficiency in Illinois nursing homes, which refers to all possible accidents within a facility. Across the country, food sanitation was found to top the list for most frequent nursing home violations, followed by quality of care and accidents.

In 2003, Indiana ranked 21 st and Illinois followed closely behind at 26 th for having the highest percentage of certified nursing homes receiving a deficiency for causing actual harm or jeopardy to residents. During 2003, one in five Indiana nursing homes received a serious deficiency, and while Illinois nursing homes scored a little better, 17 percent of its' facilities still received serious deficiencies.

The report is posted on statehealthfacts.org and includes information about state nursing home backgrounds in several categories, including occupancy rates, serious deficiencies and the numbers on total nursing home beds and residents based on 2003 data from several agencies. California led the country in total number of certified nursing home facilities, based on 2003 data, with 1,291.

Illinois ranked fourth in country with 752, and Indiana ranked ninth with 502. The total number of nursing home residents in Illinois was nearly double that of Indiana's, with 72,172 compared to 38,000, according to the report. Despite that, both Illinois and Indiana were below the national average in the category of occupancy rates based on 2003 numbers – Indiana ranked 36 th with an 83 percent rate and Illinois ranked 40 th with an 80.6 percent rank.

On a more positive note, the 2003 numbers also showed Indiana placed fifth for having 18.5 percent of its certified homes receive no deficiencies, and Illinois ranked 11 th with 13 percent.
