Illinois Nursing Home to Pay $925,000 Settlement Following Resident's Death
May 29, 2007
Manorcare, a nursing home in South Holland, Illinois has agreed to settle a lawsuit by the family of an elderly woman who died at the nursing home, her death allegedly due to severe neglect by the facility's staff.
Lottie Chubinski was admitted to the nursing home in early June 2001 after a fall at her home. She became malnourished and dehydrated as a result of the staff's neglect, and was eventually unable to walk or undergo physical therapy due to the infection from severe bedsores that spread to her blood and bone.
Despite her family's repeated complaints and requests to the Manorcare staff for better care and medical attention, neither was provided, and Ms. Chubinski continued to deteriorate. She died in November 2001 at the age of 86. The family's attorney, Steven Levin, called her case "a classic example of institutional neglect." He contended, "The facility was understaffed, inadequately supervised and insufficiently trained."
The settlement between Ms. Chubinski's family and Manorcare was approved on May 21 by Judge Lynn Egan of Cook County.
