"
Nursing Home Protection Going to Expire in Illinois
"
The state of Illinois doesn't have the money to create the new positions needed to fill an independent nursing home investigation division. Laws were passed three years ago creating the division but nothing was ever done and now the division will expire on July 1 without ever existing.
The division was to be a part of the Illinois Department of Public Health created to investigate allegations of sexual assaults and wrongful deaths in nursing homes. Several other states including California, Texas, Maine, Arizona and Arkansas have similar divisions that allow the state to make independent inquiries into abuse allegations.

"IL Releeases Troubling October Nursing Home Violations"
In just one month, the Illinois Department of Public Health has found type “A” violations in twelve of that state's nursing homes. A type “A” violation is the most serious violation a nursing home can have and results from conditions where there is a good probability that a patient would die, or suffer from some serious harm, because of the infraction.
The new statistics point to an alarming trend around the country: more and more nursing homes are becoming less safe for patients to reside at, and much more needs to be done about the situation.

"Illinois nursing home abuse bill
criticized"
There is a pending law in Illinois that was proposed with the intentions
of preventing instances of nursing home abuse. Instead, critics
of the bill believe problematic Illinois nursing homes will be warned
before inspectors arrives to investigate any Illinois nursing home
abuse complaints. Many other states have not adopted this Illinois
nursing home proposal because the new law would allow state investigators
to call the nursing homes if they wanted, opposed to the current
way of investigating any nursing home abuse claims with an unannounced
visit.
Around 20% of the Illinois Department of Public
Health nursing home abuse investigations are considered a valid
complaint of the approximately 6,000 complaints made every year.
Since Illinois nursing home abuse numbers are considered greatly
underreported, the new bill would result in more instances going
unacknowledged. The industry standard for investigating claims of
nursing home abuse is for on-site, unannounced nursing home visits.
