"Nine Employees Fired and State Sanctions Filed in Indiana Nursing Home Abuse"
The state of Indiana has put a temporary ban on new patients being admitted to the Hanover Nursing Center due to allegations of widespread abuse at the facility.
In one case a 79-year-old woman was beaten and left in her bed with a bleeding face.
Following investigations into the alleged abuse, some nine employees have been fired, the facility cannot admit new residents and has been fined, and criminal charges are likely to be filed. The Indiana Department of Health has recommended a daily fine of $4,050 retroactively beginning August 30, the day the investigation began. The fines will continue to be leveled until the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have determined they are no longer necessary.
The Department of Health report stated that four patients had been repeatedly verbally and physically abused since August. Amy Johnson, a former aide at the nursing home, was charged with felony battery. According to the details in the report, Johnson, 28, punched a 79-year-old woman in the face repeatedly. The woman suffered multiple wounds including two black eyes and had bleeding from both her mouth and nose.
A trial date for Johnson and another involved employee has been set for January 12, 2006. The two have entered pleas of "not guilty."
In another incident a male patient who had refused to go to bed was choked until his face turned blue and had his thumbs bent backward by staff employees.
The Hanover Nursing Center in Hanover, Indiana is one of 15 nursing homes in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin operated by Medical Rehabilitation Centers Inc. of Lexington, Kentucky.
