Kentucky Nursing Home Gets Rare Citation
"
The state of Kentucky has issued its first citation to the Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Calvert City after the death of one of its patients. The patient, 24-year-old David Ritchie, died after his wheelchair fell over outside on November 8, 2006.
Mr. Ritchie was left alone outside when the accident occurred. He had long been suffering from muscular dystrophy. Ritchie died by suffocation from the heaviness of the wheelchair, which had pinned him to the ground. The citation was issued this past Friday and is the facility's first such penalty.
The nursing home administrator, Tracy Bennett, recently defended the facility against any criticism saying that Ritchie's whereabouts were not the nursing home's problems. These statements and Mr. Ritchie's death have provoked intense outrage from family members and the local community.

" Kentucky nursing home abuse allegations "
Attorney General Greg Stumbo announced two nursing assistants have been indicted for multiple counts of abuse at Irvine Health and Rehabilitation Center.
According to the Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Control Division, the two nursing assistants abused elderly and medically fragile patients by administering laxative suppositories not part of their prescribed treatments.
The investigations found many patients suffered pain and bleeding, and the actions were intended to harass the following shift of nursing assistants. If convicted, the two nursing home assistants face up to five years in prison for each count of abuse. Both workers were immediately fired from the center when administrators learned of the abuse.
Irvine Health and Rehabilitation Center Administrators issued a statement regarding the allegations of nursing home abuse, stating they are aware of the charges
