" MA Nursing Home Taken Over By State "

-November 18, 2005
The Ann Carroll Nursing Home in Lynn, Massachusetts has been taken over by the state after a male resident allegedly raped and sexually assaulted six female residents. The man is still a resident at the nursing home, despite the charges, but is being supervised closely while there.

Paul Dreyer, who supervises nursing homes for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, said that the case was especially troubling because of the lack of protection the nursing home provided the patients who were assaulted.

Many of the residents at the Ann Carroll nursing home suffer from mental illness or past drug and alcohol abuse. Records released by the state said that female residents reported their fears about the unidentified man for a long time. Officials at the nursing home knew the man was a threat and failed to take measures after learning about him, according to a filed complaint.

Massachusetts Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly's office filed the complaint, which also included other neglectful behavior at the nursing home, including other instances of physical abuse and an incident where a female patient with a history of drug and alcohol problems was allowed vodka.

A warning was issued by the state in October but nothing was ever done to remedy the problems. The man accused of the assault was a patient since March but was put in a hospital in August because of patterns of aggressive behavior.
