New York Nursing Home Abuse
Rochester, New York Nursing Home Closes its Doors
January 20, 2006
After much controversy, the Jennifer Matthew Nursing Home in Rochester, New York will be officially closed in 90 days due to the unveiling of grave cases of neglect. A hidden camera investigation began at the nursing home when suspicions surfaced regarding the abuse. Family members consented to the presence of cameras in relative’s bedrooms and living facilities to prove irrefutable negligent care on the part of the nursing home.
The cameras installed revealed cases of gross negligence by nurses, nursing assistants and other staff at the facility, posing a great risk for the resident’s health and safety. Videos showed residents left in their own waste for hours, unmoved in their beds for days, in overheated rooms, and left without a call button to call for help when they were in need. Meanwhile, nursing staff was seen watching movies, sleeping and even leaving the nursing home facility.
Since the investigation, 9 former Jennifer Matthew employees have pleaded guilty to charges of neglect, in addition to five others who have been charged as well at the nursing home. Most recently, was the plea of certified nursing assistant Jessie Simmons, who will permanently lose her privileges to work at any nursing facility in the state of New York.
Jennifer Matthew Nursing Home administrators will be meeting with families of residents later today to discuss the pending close of the facility.
