"Adult Care Resident Awarded $1M in Nursing Negligence Suit"
The estate of a Winston-Salem man who died as a result of the negligence of the nursing staff in an adult care home was awarded $1 million in damages.
Eighty-six-year old Fred Johnson Brown died in 2003 after he developed pressure sores on his feet. His injuries occurred a week within his admittance to the Springwood Care Center, an adult care facility.
According to the Forsyth County jury, who awarded damages in the personal injury and wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of Brown's estate, the nursing staff's negligence directly resulted in Brown's death.
“The jury found that the pressure sores did not cause Brown's death, but (the sores) were caused by negligence by the staff at the nursing home and that caused him pain and suffering,” said plaintiff attorney David Pishko.
Novant Health, which runs the adult care home, plans on filing an appeal, said spokeswoman Freda Springs.
According to the lawsuit, Brown suffered a severe stroke that left him unable to move before he was transferred to the adult care home. He was at high risk of developing bedsores and the staff should have known that, the lawsuit states.
