Nursing Home Abuses Man, Daughter Sues

October 23 , 2006

The daughter of a man who died after extensive nursing home abuse and neglect that resulted in bed sores, infections, and a drug overdose sued the nursing home after he died.

The Brooklyn man, Abraham Ticknor, died at 87 after a series of hospitalizations to treat the many large ulcers scattered over his body. His daughter, Diane Skier sued the nursing home, Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Jewish Geriatric Center, and Maimonides Medical Center, claiming that they were negligent in giving him the proper care.

“My dad wrote poetry. He was involved in the Freemasons. He was very vital to the community,” said Diane Skier, Ticknor’s daughter.

Ticknor has lived in the nursing home since he suffered a debilitating stroke in the mid 1990’s.

The Abuse

Skier said that the nursing home did not act to prevent the formation of many bed sores on Ticknor’s body. She also said that staff even put a shoe over an ulcer that had formed on one of Ticknor’s feet.

The suit further alleged that Ticknor suffered an overdose when a doctor gave him too much coumadin – a blood-thinning drug. Ticknor needed a blood transfusion as a result.

The mistakes and indignities do not end there, however. Skier said that Ticknor was left to lie in his own waste for days at a time. Skier also claimed that what appeared to be a telephone cord had been inserted into Ticknor’s anus at the hospital, and that it was not removed for days.

Nursing home medical records confirm that they had removed a cord (that the hospital admitted was a heating blanket cord, after first claiming it was a temperature probe) from Ticknor’s rectum after he had been hospitalized for 6 days.

“Since when do you place the cord from a heating blanket in someone’s rectum?” Skier asked.

Andrew Nitkewicz, Skier’s lawyer said that he has been getting the runaround from the facilities and their nurses since he’s filed motions asking to question them.

“They’re not following the court’s orders,” said Nitkewicz.

The Metropolitan Jewish Geriatric Center was also fined for violations of care quality standards involving bed sores in 2001.

“My father wanted to be kept alive. When I go looking for answers, I run into brick walls,” said Skier.
