Lawsuit: Nursing Home Causes Leg Amputation

February 27 , 2007

A nursing home resident who suffered severe infections and eventually had to have her leg amputated, allegedly as a result of negligence on the part of a nursing home, has filed a lawsuit against the nursing home operator.

The suit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court on behalf of Barbara Brison by Libby Johnson, claims that South Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center LLC, and its parent company, Care Centers Inc., abused Brison in various ways, including failing to feed her properly, leading to the illness that cost her her leg.

This is the second lawsuit filed against the nursing home conglomerate in the last two months claiming nursing home abuse. Care Center is a defendant in the lawsuit filed last month over abuse at the Prairie Manor Nursing Home.

The Suit

According to the lawsuit, Barbara Brison did not receive adequate nutrition in 88 meals from July to December of 2005. This led her to become dehydrated, which combined with her diabetes, put her at an extremely high risk of acquiring a serious infection.

“Certainly the failure to provide feedings as documented by the Illinois department of Public Health is outrageous,” said Robert Rooth, Brison’s attorney.

The missed meals took their toll on Brison, and eventually she acquired infections in her leg. She had to have her leg amputated.

Rooth said that Brison’s survival depended on the staff at South Shore nursing home, but she was not properly cared for.

When she returned from her leg amputation surgeries, “the family was looking for other homes, but before they could place her somewhere else she passed away,” said Rooth.
