Illinois Nursing Home Fined for Giving Resident Ten-Times Dosage
May 22 , 2007
The Astoria Gardens and Rehab Center, a skilled/intermediate care nursing home facility in Astoria, Illinois was recently fined $22,500 by the Illinois Department of Public Health for accidentally giving an elderly female resident ten times the prescribed amount of the medication morphine sulfate in September 2006.
Several Violations of Nursing Standards
The fine was also based on the failure by the nursing home’s staff to immediately notify the woman’s physician when the overdose was discovered, and on the failure of the facility to inform and educated the nurse responsible for the medication error before the nurse worked another shift at the facility.
A Fatal Medication Error?
The nursing home resident, a 93-pound woman with congestive heart failure, hypertension, diabetes and chronic kidney disease, died two days after receiving the overdose.
