Pennsylvania Nursing Home Death Investigated "
A 70-year-old woman died in a nursing home in Pennsylvania over the weekend and authorities are investigating whether the nursing home may have been at fault or not. The woman passed away after overdosing on her medicine at the Laurel Crest nursing home, Cambria County, PA's public nursing home.
The unnamed woman was a resident at the facility for several months. President Commissioner PJ Stevens said that the licensed nurse who administered the dose notified authorities that she had given an overdose and that it was an incorrect amount. The unnamed nurse has been suspended with pay until the investigation into the incident is complete.
During unusual deaths, officials at Laurel Crest are required to notify the district attorney and coroner's offices, and the state Department of Health and the Area Agency on Aging, which they did. District Attorney Davie Tulowitszki reported that an investigation is underway to determine if any crime had been committed in the case.
The exact cause of death may take up to eight weeks to determine.
The Department of Health will look into the nursing home's procedures during the case and the training history of the facility's employees and safety procedures.
In 1999 another patient at Laurel Crest, 81-year-old Estelle Helsel, died under mysterious circumstances. An investigation turned up wrongdoing by the facility and several criminal charges were looked into and employees fired.
