Abuse Lawsuit Filed Against Nursing Home
September 25 , 2007
A lawsuit has been filed against a Greenbrier County nursing home by a law firm on behalf of a woman who claims she was abused while living in the facility.
The suit claims that the nursing home's employees were abusive and caused the dehydration and malnutrition of the elderly.
Suit Details
The lawsuit has been filed on behalf of Eloise Gates, an 84-year-old woman who was previously a resident at the home.
Gates was admitted to the facility suffering from dementia and diminished cognitive skills.
Greenbrier Manor, Catherine Hill and 20 other defendants have been named in the suit.
"There were at least seven documented falls with the last one incurring a significant injury over her right eye," claims the attorney for the case, James B. McCugh. "She may have suffered a brain injury and the staff never responded, because she was exhibiting coma-like conditions."
Gates Suffers from Malnutrition
The suit claims that Gates suffered from infections, malnutrition and dehydration while living in the home.
According to reports, Gates lost 12 percent of her body fat in less than three months while at the home.
"We believe in not feeding her to the point of losing 20 pounds in abuse, and failing to recognize that she was suffering from a brain injury is abuse and by anyone's definition, neglect."
