More Seniors Are Shunning Nursing Homes
December 9, 2005
As more and more Americans get older, more of them want to stay at home and be taken care of there, rather than in nursing homes, a new report shows. Mike O'Donnell, director of the East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging has recently stated that cities around the country may not have enough services for people to stay at home and be taken care of there, however.
O'Donnell has pointed to the condition of cities and their neighborhoods as one reason he feels more needs to be done. Sidewalks in disrepair, access to medical facilities, and locations of shopping centers all need to be taken into account when seniors start having home-based care in their later years.
These and other topics will be discussed this weekend from Sunday to Wednesday at the 2005 White House Conference on Aging, to be held in Washington DC.
Conference delegates have some 73 resolutions to be debated and announced. Only 50 resolutions will be chosen and acted upon, however. These 50 resolutions can be eventually made into federal laws and can mean sweeping nationwide changes for US seniors and the ways in which they retire, and live out their golden years.
