$10M Settlement Reached in Negligence Case
July 2 , 2008
The family of a woman who died days after leaving her Ohio nursing home has reached a settlement in the suit they filed against the facility.
Life Care Centers of America was named as the defendant in the suit and the family claims the staff was negligent in the care of their love one.
Elderly Woman Becomes Victim
Verdie Matthews, 83, was reportedly admitted to the Life Care nursing home to receive short-term rehabilitation therapy in 2006.
Four days after leaving the home Matthews reportedly died from dehydration and malnutrition.
According to court documents, when she had arrived at the home she weighed 105 pounds and left weighing a meek 92 pounds.
Family Takes Action and Files Suit
Following her untimely death, Matthews’ son filed a lawsuit against the center claiming that due to their negligence they were responsible for the loss.
Thomas Hornbuckle, the attorney for the family, says the staff at the home failed to properly hydrate and feed Matthews.
Settlement Reached and Justice Served
The Ohio jury determined that Life Care is guilty of being negligent in the care they provided for Matthews.
“I’m very happy with the verdict,” stated Thomas Hornbuckle, after the verdict was announced.
