Nation's nursing homes being filled with sex offenders

November 15, 2004

A troubling discovery is being made across the nation and many people are horrified at what has been going on. Across the country, nursing homes are taking convicted sex offenders and violent criminals in, allowing them to live amongst vulnerable adults. Reports of sexual and physical assault in nursing homes led a nursing home watchdog to search records in 37 states. There were 380 registered sex offenders living in nursing homes, which excluded other felons and older sex offenders that are no longer required to register.

The extent of the problem is not fully known, but for the families that have endured painful experiences of loved ones becoming victims of heinous crimes, determination to stop the dual housing arrangement has become a priority. Because Medicaid or Medicare pays the bill when prisoners fill empty nursing home beds, before allowing nursing home residents to be potentially subjected to sexual offenders, the least that can be done are background checks. In many reports, nursing homes were not even aware of the prisoners' offenses before allowing them to reside among the residents.
