Six Workers Plead Guilty in NY Nursing Home Abuse
December 7, 2005
An unprecedented six workers pleaded guilty at an upstate New York nursing home on charges related to their care of one particular patient. The workers all were employed at the Jennifer Matthew Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Portland Avenue in Rochester, NY.
The convictions come after a state Attorney General investigation that included videotaping of the patient and the nursing facility as well as other investigative measures. The taping of the workers not caring for one particular elderly male patient who had dementia comes on the heels of thousands of cases of nursing home abuse throughout the country.
In this particular case the New York Attorney General Office's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit found that nobody on the staff was giving the patient his required level of care. This care included such vital things as turning the patient over, examinations for incontinence and even giving the man his breathing medication in a timely and frequent manner. All of the staff members signed off several times saying that they had indeed given the man the care he needed, even when videotapes proved otherwise.
This isn't the first time the Jennifer Matthew Nursing Home has been cited, in fact it is the frequent target of several New York state investigations including a recent citation of “immediate jeopardy” one of the state's most serious violations.
The workers found guilty included four certified nurse's aides, Robin Hood Henry, Maria Rivera, Teresa Washington and Dixie Whitman and two licensed practical nurses, Natasha Grooms and Felecia Thomas. An additional certified nurse's aide Tammy Devos entered a plea of not guilty.
