"
Receptionist in Texas Nursing Home Stole Thousands from Patient"
A receptionist in a central Texas nursing home was found guilty of stealing thousands of dollars from a patient's trust fund on Friday. The woman, Sharel R. Carmichael, 39, was further ordered to pay a $10,000 fine to cover the loss of the money and associated legal and other costs. She had stolen a total of $2,935 from a resident at the Ridgecrest Retirement Center in Woodway, TX.
The Texas Attorney General and the McLennan County District Attorney's Office also sentenced Carmichael to five years probation and 300 hours of community service. Attorney General Greg Abbott expressed concern over the case, saying how it highlights the abuse that takes place in nursing homes around the country, and not just by nurses or medical staff.
Carmichael was indicted in June of 2005 for misapplication of fiduciary property and theft.

"$700K Award in Texas Nursing Home Death"
A 2003 nursing home death at the Prairie House Living Center in Plainview, Texas resulted in a lawsuit that settled this week for $700,000. The patient involved choked to death in the west-Texas city over two years ago.
Francis Chiddix, only 65 at the time, died in March of 2003 after choking on a piece of brisket. Chiddix was a longtime nurse and a patient on Medicaid. At some point in her past she had suffered a stroke that led to dementia and other physical problems. Her illness put her at a high risk for having swallowing difficulties. She had also suffered from choking in one incident while she was outside the nursing home in the past.
The settlement included money from an escrow account that had been set up in July, when the nursing home facility changed ownership. The Prairie House Living Center was a specialist in Alzheimer's patients as well as providing care for a general elderly patient population.
As part of the settlement, the nursing home and its then-directors JB Roberts and Paul Johnson do not have to have an admission of guilt or liability in the death of Francis Chiddix.
